HUMAN DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE The purpose of the Human Development Committee is to implement programs that will reach out and alleviate the needs of fellow parishioners and members of the local community. There are several facets of the reach out effort. The Human Development Reach Out Collection takes place twice a year, usually in October and March. Parishioners contribute financially to the Human Development Fund during this time. However, contributions can be made at any time. The OLA Food Pantry is stocked with canned goods which have been donated by parishioners. It is a means of having supplies on hand for parishioners who need food assistance. CHOW Referrals are also made from the Parish Office for non-parishioners. Thanksgiving Food Baskets are prepared by members of the parish. The food supplies consisting of canned goods, packaged foods and frozen turkeys are donated by parishioners. Some people prefer to donate money to purchase needed supplies. Catholic Charities has the names of families who are requesting Thanksgiving Baskets and we usually fill about 50, or so, requests. The Giving Tree is set up in time for the beginning of Advent. The tree is covered with tags for clothing items needed for Christmas. The tags are prepared so that area agencies, such as: Catholic Charities, Mom's House, Birthright, Jail Ministry will receive the necessary items to make Christmas special for the people they serve. Personal Hygiene Products are sent to St. Ambrose Food Pantry. The OLA Human Development Committee on behalf of Our Lady of Angels Parish supplies the basic items of soap, bathroom tissue, facial tissue, feminine products, and toothbrushes. The monthly supplies sent are greatly needed and appreciated. The St. Ambrose Food Pantry serves the Western Broome County area. OLA, along with other Catholic Parishes of Western Broome contribute to this worthy and admirable effort. The Cincinnatus Rural Ministry is helped by seasonal clothing and household supply drives which take place here at OLA. Parishioners donate clothing appropriate for the particular season, along with bedding, towels, etc. The clothing drives are well advertised in the Church bulletin. Parishioners may contribute baby items to support Birthright. Baby supplies are collected on designated weekends in the month of May. A playpen is set up in the Social Hall for parishioners to place their donations. Parishioners are always welcome to the Human Development Meetings, and are invited to participate in the various projects of the Human Development Committee. It is gratifying to give of one 5 time, energy, and material goods to share with others who are in need. |
