| The one room schoolhouse no. 4 is dedicated at
its new location in the Hamlet of Maine. It is easy to
see that much reconstruction remains to be done. But all things
are possible when many hands work together.
The one room school house project began with a "Wouldn't
it be nice to have a replica school house?"
comment during the Sesquicentennial planning. Building
a replica was more difficult than expected so a search was
begun for an old building. Pat Kollar found one in
Endicott. It was once a part of a joint school
district of Owego and Union. It was donated to the Nanticoke
Valley Historical Society by the owners of the land upon which
it sat with the stipulation that the historical society was
responsible for moving it.
A Schoolhouse Committee (a subcommittee of the
Nanticoke Valley Historical Society) was formed to work
on plans to move the schoolhouse from Cafferty Hill to the
Hamlet of Maine. The cost of the move was ten thousand dollars.
Pat Kollar and Michele Knaul are Co-chairpersons of the
Schoolhouse Committee. Also helping are
teachers and parents of Maine-Endwell students, members
of the Nanticoke Valley Historical Society plus interested
parties of the public at large.
The school house is situated in the "Y" formed
by Rt #26 and Nanticoke Rd. at the North end of the Hamlet
of Maine. The building will be used, in part, to demonstrate
to contemporary school children what it was like to
attend school in the early 1900s. It will also
serve as a display area for educational artifacts for
all to appreciate.
Money for the move was received from several
grants. Funds to restore the building have been
raised by selling T-shirts (with a special Johnny Hart
designed logo), Schoolhouse No. 4 Pencils and other items.
See the "How Can I
Help" for details.
