A MESSAGE FROM THE EXALTED RULER

Brothers And Sisters In Elkdom,

I am so proud of our lodge. Our members and officers continue to support their lodge and community.  Wendy Turner organized and presented a beautiful ceremony for Flag Day.   One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the POW/MIA flag which was carried by Vietnam Veterans. The audience contained  World War II and Korean Vets, including a former prisoner of war.

July 4th we celebrate Independence day.  A day centered around our flag and those who have defended it.  In our initiation we state, "As this emblem is first in our hearts as loyal Americans, so is it close to our Altar as loyal Elks.  The gentle breezes with lingering caress kiss the folds of no flag which can compare with it in beauty.  There is no such red in budding rose, in falling leaf or sparkling wine; no such white in April blossom , in crescent moon or mountain snow; no such blue in woman's eye, in ocean's depth or heaven's dome; and no such pageantry of clustering stars and streaming light in all the spectrum of the sea and sky ".

If there is one area our lodge could improve upon is our support of our Veterans.  Herb does an amazing job contributing to the quality of life of the Oxford Home Veterans. Herb has asked our membership to visit once a year. Lori Wahila, Bob Gillette, Scott Gow and myself have all heeded Herb's plea.  There is no driving, gas, or preparation required.  He goes every third Sunday. Meet at the lodge, Herb will drive.  You spend an hour at the Home. With driving included this totals only 2 1/2 hours per year to support those who have given so much to ensure freedom.

I end this note, as we end our initiation, "Finally, strive diligently that the name of Elk as borne by you may be worthy of an American citizen, one who loves their fellow man."

Fraternally, Alicia Beck Exalted Ruler
