My year as Exalted Ruler is coming to a close.  Next month's newsletter will contain my last message.  I would like to devote this month's message to Ron Foster.

Ron will be assuming the Exalted Ruler role April 1st.  Ron was a charter member proposed by Cathy Massie.  He has been a driving force behind the scenes.  When the lodge moved to its current location Ron and Bill Bayliff worked tirelessly to remodel the lodge.  When the flood occurred in 2006 Ron devoted countless hours in labor. He has been a past Officer of the Year, Elk of the Month, House Committee Chair, Leading Knight, Inner Guard, etc.  His new slate of officers will provide support and direction for our lodge in the 2007-2008.

During this transitional phase, I would like to revisit why we all became Elks.  There is an excellent publication by our Grand Lodge which is called "Why Be a Member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.

BECAUSE:

  •     We love our country and desire to preserve its cherished institutions, traditions and value.
  •     We love, enjoy life and believe this enjoyment is increased by sharing it with family, friends, and all with whom we come in contact.
  •     We believe the dream of a better world becomes reality when shaped by enough willing hearts and hands.
  •     We offer over two million dollars yearly to bring encouragement, cheer and comfort to hospitalized veterans through out the United States.
  •     We believe: "So long as there are veterans in our hospitals, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them".
  •     We believe in the cardinal principles of the B.P.O. Elks: Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity.
  •     We believe practicing these virtues in our community will make them a better place to live.

So, as I am preparing to pass on the role of leadership to Ron, let's renew the spirit in which we took our solemn oath.  I know he can count on your support and dedication to our lodge.

Please allow me to introduce, Ron Foster, to add a few words:

My primary goal for the coming year is to address those members who we do not see. I would like to encourage them to visit the lodge and become involved.  I also would like to offer some opportunities. I have some available openings for this coming year. These include, Loyal Knight as well as Visitation, Americanism and Flag Day Chairpersons.  Please let me know if you are interested in any of these valued positions.

I am looking forward, with eagerness, to working with my officers and membership in the coming year.-Ron

Fund Raising for our First Annual 2007

            “Child in Need” Christmas Party!

You will see a very large bottle with signage attached asking for pennies, nickels and dimes to support the 2007 Children’s Christmas Party.  We are very blessed to have Sharon Flint who is willing to undertake this project for our lodge.  The party will be geared to our community’s children in need.  (Only 11 months to go…….)

So, empty your pockets, save those pennies, nickels and dimes (they grow into dollars so quickly) and deposit them for a good cause!

Community Activities:

In January we started a program to recognize our Police, Fire and UVES Personnel.  We will be inviting the police, fire or ambulance personnel for a complimentary Friday night dinner.  We will prepare take out for delivery or pick-up. If you are interested in helping with deliveries on a Friday evening please email me at wbeck@stny.rr.com.

After the recent events involving one of our Johnson City Police Officers, we realize how important it is to say thank-you to those who serve us.
